What steps should I take in case of a plumbing emergency?

How To Handle a Plumbing Emergency

Vancouver PlumberAttention homeowners! It's not a full-blown, 100 percent guarantee that you will have a plumbing emergency at the most inconvenient time of the day or night, but it comes pretty close. The reason we can make this statement is that we know from our decades of plumbing experience serving the public, that Murphy's Law is alive and well. You know: Whatever can go wrong; will go wrong, or words to that effect.

We understand plumbing headaches can happen at home or in your place of business. And the usual suspects are: clogged drains, leaky toilets or kitchen faucets plus frozen water pipes and pipes that burst during extreme winter conditions that many places in this country are experiencing as we speak. It's plain to see that Mother Nature is upset.

That said before we can make an appearance on the scene to investigate and solve the problem, there are a few things you can do to stem the tide that will make you feel better until we arrive. If you know where the main shut-off valve of the water is located, and you should, that will terminate the water flow. Knowing where the electrical switches are located helps meaning half of the plumbing emergency battle has been won and you can relax until we get to your residence.

Another item to consider is knowing the places where emergencies happen more frequently. And if we may be so bold to remind you, those two places are the kitchen and the bathrooms. Ergo, knowing where the shut-off valve is under the sink and in the bathrooms, will give us advance notice on what to investigate when we arrive.

So to summarize if the problem is a leaky faucet, turn the water supply off. With a clogged drain, eschew the usual plunger, and contact your plumber immediately. This is one conundrum you don't want to mess with; it definitely needs a professional touch. Finally if you are not confident in your plumbing abilities, don't make matters worse. Call your best friend in this situation: your plumber. In the long term, you'll save money.
