Signs That It's Time to Replace the Thermostat

Signs the Thermostat Needs Replacing

In an HVAC system, the thermostat is the control center or brain of the operation. It tells the rest of the system what to do. Whether that’s turning on the air conditioner when it’s too warm inside or kicking on the heater when it’s too cold, the thermostat is essential for proper function.

Unfortunately, thermostats can go on the fritz like any other component in the system. The trick is knowing what signs to look for that indicate the thermostat may need to be replaced. So read on to learn the most common signs of a broken thermostat.

Climbing Energy Bills

billOne major sign that it’s time for a new thermostat is abnormally high energy bills. Since the thermostat communicates with the rest of the HVAC system, a malfunction can cause the system to operate inefficiently. And when this happens, energy bills tend to climb.

If the sensors aren’t reading the temperature in the home correctly, the system can run longer than it should, wasting energy in the process. Problems with the thermostat can also cause the unit to turn on or off prematurely, which can also cause rising energy costs. Replacing the thermostat will cause energy bills to lower, especially with a programmable or smart thermostat.

Faulty Temperature Readings

readingsAnother sign of a broken thermostat is faulty temperature readings. The system could read and display incorrect temperatures if the sensors malfunction or the calibration is off. This is often noticeable when the thermostat reads one temperature, but it feels hotter or colder in the house. The system could be reading a higher temperature when it’s really lower, which could cause the system to run when it doesn’t need to and waste money.

Determining if the thermostat is reading incorrect temperatures is fairly straightforward. It just requires an indoor thermometer to determine the temperature inside the house. If there’s a significant difference between what the thermometer and the thermostat say, it could be time to replace the thermostat.

Short Cycling System

The third sign of a faulty thermostat is called short cycling. This is when the HVAC system cycles on and off faster than it should. This can happen during either the heating or cooling process; if the thermostat is to blame, it will likely happen during both. But this can also be caused by poor thermostat placement, such as in a drafty area of the house.

No matter the cause, short cycling is very detrimental to the health of an HVAC system. When the system cycles on and off too quickly, it doesn’t ever complete a cooling or heating cycle. Not only does this mean the house will be uncomfortable, but it also means the system is constantly overworking. This causes energy bills to increase and components to wear down faster than they otherwise would. Short cycling is one of the major signs of a broken thermostat, so it’s important to have the thermostat checked if the system is turning on and off too quickly.
