Precautions For Water Leaks
So you are in the laundry room, folding clothes after the most recent wash, when you step over into an area of the laundry room and you feel the cold rush of water hit your toes. Now this is not supposed to be, so you turn on a light on the other side of the room and notice a nice pool of water forming in and around your feet. This can send a shock of panic down your spine, as after all, there is not supposed to be water here in the room, but you might not know where it is coming from.
Chances are, you are going to turn on a flashlight in order to try and look around the area to see what is going on, but unless there is a giant, noticeable hole, you probably are not going to be able to see it. Due to this, you need to turn off the water and proceed to call a professional plumber in order to correct the leak before it becomes a much larger problem.
First off, thankfully the leak happened in the basement. If there is any room you want a leak to happen in over other rooms, it is in your basement, as it is not probably going to damage the floor in the laundry room. However, to prevent more water from flowing into the room the water does need to be turned off. With the water off, the leak is going to subside, but it might not drain. You now need to call your local plumber and have them come in and check out what is going on with the leak.
While the plumber is on their way, you can do your best to clean up the water. If it is just a small puddle, it might not be worth cleaning up so the plumber can see what is going on. However, if there is the chance of potential damage to items inside of the basement, you can go about using a wet-dry vac, if you have one, or absorb some of the water with towels (or just move the valuable items you have in the basement).
Now, the plumber can do what they need to do in order to identify the problem and fix it. Once everything is fixed, you are able to go back to folding clothes in a completely dry room that does not have a leak.
