How to Purify Your Indoor Air

Unique Ways to Clean and Sanitize Your Indoor Air

Vancouver coolingKeeping your indoor air clean not only makes for a cleaner home, it could be a necessity to keep your family healthy. If you have family members who struggle with allergies and asthma, clean indoor air is a necessity. Here are some unique ways to clean and sanitize the air in your home.

Go Negative

A unique way to clean your indoor air that many people don't know about is to use negative ions. Negative ions cause dirt, allergens, pet dander and other particles in the air to clump together. As the particles clump, they become too heavy to float and fall to the ground, where they can be taken care of by sweeping or vacuuming.

There are air-purifying machines you can buy that put negative ions into the air, but you can also do it naturally as well. Beeswax candles and salt lamps are two natural products that clean your air with negative ions.

Use Plants

Many common house plants can help purify your indoor air by filtering toxins that float through the air. Among the varieties that work well in the home are palm trees, rubber trees, chrysanthemums, certain types of lilies and English ivy.

Increase Ventilation with Trickle Vents

Increasing ventilation usually is as easy as opening up the windows, but when you have allergy and asthma issues in your home, you likely need to keep the windows closed. Installing trickle vents, which are small vents that leave tiny openings under your windows, will allow filtered air to flow in.

Use UV Light

Just as it destroys micro-organisms in water and on surfaces, ultraviolet light can kill viruses and bacteria that are floating around in your air. You can either buy a portable air purifying unit that utilizes UV light or you can have UV lamps installed in your ventilation system. Talk to your HVAC technician about what options might be available to you.

Charcoal

You probably think of charcoal more as an air pollutant than an air purifier, but when it's not being burned in your grill, charcoal is actually good for your air. Activated charcoal removes toxins from the air and also can help with odor control.
