Plumbing emergencies typically can't be accounted for until they happen and only then can property owners look back and see how it could have been avoided. Fortunately there are ways to handle plumbing emergencies that don't include having a breakdown. While these emergencies can be stressful, the following tips should go a long way toward making them more manageable
Cut the water.
Water damage is the primary concern when it comes to plumbing emergencies, and for good reason! Coming home to a kitchen that has standing water in it is absolutely horrifying. Seeing that same water seep toward the living room carpet or onto a bunch of prized possessions is just dreadful. So the first thing that needs to be done is that the water needs to be shut off. Find the main water valve and turn it off. Follow that up by turning off the water heater. With these two acts done the damage can now start to be reeled in.
Remove property from effected areas.
If there is something that will incur damage from water, remove it from the afflicted room. Move the property outside into the sun so that it can begin to dry and while that happens start cleaning up the standing water. Use mops, buckets, and anything else possible. Turn on ventilation systems to keep the water moving and keep fans going to help push the water to evaporate. While this is happening move on to finding an emergency plumber.
Get a local emergency plumber.
With all of the present damage risk taken care of it is now time to take a moment and get a plumber on board. Plumbing problems are big enough deals that they shouldn't be done DIY. So pull open a phone book and start feeding through the different plumbers available. Don't be afraid to take some time to do research as it could save you big money in the long run. Get estimates from the most well reviewed companies and then see which one is most readily available to come get the work done. Letting this problem sit isn't advisable.
Practice preventative maintenance.
With the problem fixed and damage downplayed it is time to start eying up preventative measures. Find the root cause of this plumbing failure and find out what could prevent it from happening again. Employ those techniques.
